Thank you so much for the information and your stand on the subject. I am going up for my third degree on August the 23rd at the La Plata Lodge in Missouri. I have given FULL proficiency back in Entered Apprentice and Fellow Craft I would'nt think of doing it any other way. By doing full proficiency I have grown closer to my sponsor and friend Greg and loved the rituals. I loved the article.

I came here via Brother Chris Hodapp's blog, Freemasons for Dummies, where he was praising this article. I was not disappointed, it's a great read.

I am one of those guys who has just started knocking on the door; I was voted on and unanimously accepted but not yet initiated because the Lodge I petitioned has gone dark for the summer. I have spent the past couple of months after petitioning reading as much about Masonry as I can, using only dependable sources as to not spoil any of the ritual secrets/surprises. I am certainly hungry for knowledge, and after reading your article, am even more excited to become a part of something that is not only striving to help others but to better itself by focusing on its more esoteric aspects.

I too just recently started a blog, although mine has a different purpose. I wanted to keep a record of my transformation as I go from profane to Sublime for both sentimental reasons and to provide a resource for others interested in Masonry. It is located at http://www.resurrexion.com and, if you don't mind, I have taken the liberty of linking back here.

Thanks for the article!

Great work so far - I am among the newer Masons myself and am encouraged by the return to serious learning now so often seen on the blogs. Please do keep up the work, and I will continue to read.

You spoke to the very reasons that I wanted to join the lodge, to improve my self through learning and reflection. I go for the second degree tomorrow evening, and I am very excited. I crave to learn more and continue to grow. Keep up the good work.

Thank you, Brother. I am a newly Passed Fellow Craft and I agree wholeheartedly with what you write. I do expect more from Freemasonry than others have in the past and I appreciate the fact that someone is willing to say it.

I don't want to become a 33rd Degree Mason in one weekend. I don't want my Masonic experience to consist solely of fish frys, steak dinners, and drab Lodge business about budgets or the like.

Yes, these are parts of Freemasonry and I look forward to participating in all of them but, I want Masonic Education, Esoteric Discussions, and Didactic Enlightenment on Masonic Symbolism and Allegory. I want to know and understand the rich history of Freemasonry and why the Great Thinkers of the Enlightenment sought out Freemasonry.

For me, it's all or nothing. I want to experience everything Freemasonry has to offer me so as to better myself, my family, and the community around me.

Again, thank you for putting it out there.

In Light,
Brad Ziegenbusch

This essay speaks of the very changes we have planned for our lodge. A new candidate education program, community outreach, and throw-back courses for all Brethren to reiderate not only who and why we ARE, but who and WHY we WERE and should be again.

Membership should not be about the quantity if in bolstering numbers we lose emphasis on the QUALITY of our new guys.
