Posted at: 9:35 pm Much will be written about the absolution granted by Pope Clement V after discovering that the Templars were not heretics after all. (what…haven’t you read the news?!) Ok, here’s the background. Clement V was the Pope that killed the Templar Order because he thought (or so we have been told for 700 years) that their ceremonies were heretical. It turns-out that a mis-filed paper in the Vatican’s secret stash absolves the Templar Knights and even has Clement asking for their forgiveness. de Molay may now go to heaven…thank you very much. So what does this mean to Masons? Are we not connected to this noble order? Is this not the golden ticket we have been asking for that would allow us to come out of hiding and scream from all the highest hills that we are free-at-last!!!? Sadly, no. This has no effect on Freemasonry, except… now the Knights Templar can have that joint fish-fry with the Knights of Columbus. n n

Being a Knights Templar is more that just being a member of the Commandery in the Grand Encampment. It is a personally chosen lifestyle, a certain Christian way to live your life. It is first and foremost, to seek true Christian faith in our lives. To promote love and respect for our community, support the poor, the sick, and the unjustly accused. It is to stand against oppression, protect freedom, and to encourage the noble ideals of Chivalry.
Not only am I a Mason, but I am also a member of a non-Masonic Knights Templar order. The Chinon Parchment as the Vatican calls it, written by Pope Clement V in August of 1308 and the apparent exoneration of the Knights Templar has been a big contention with us non-Masonic Knights Templar since it was discovered in the Vatican’s secret archives about ten years ago. The non-Masonic Knights Templar Orders (OPCCTS, SMOTJ, OSMTH, etc…) have in the past petitioned Pope John Paul II and I believe also recently Pope Benedict XVI to have the alleged crimes and heresies absolved and the Order of the Knights Templar restored under the Church. Will this have an effect on Freemasonry? As far as the York Rite is concerned, not in the least. Maybe it may eventually add to the history of the Knights Templar in the ritual. First of all, you have to be a Mason in order to go through the York Rite and the Church has issued numerous Papal Bulls over the past few centuries that make membership in Freemasonry against Church doctrine which has ranged from not being able to take Communion to Excommunication. However, on the other hand, it could have a profound effect on Freemasonry if in fact Freemasonry arose out of the Crusade Era Knights Templar and the Church also believed this. Could this be one of the underlying reasons why the Church has forbidden membership in Freemasonry? Being a Knights Templar and therefore being a Freemason, was considered heresy? Maybe then our Catholic Brethren can come out of the closet….

I really don’t think it would make a difference only because when you have centuries of mistrust aimed at your character it doesn’t matter if a document or statement says otherwise. It’s not like I can go into a Catholic Church to become a member, run into a very zealous and anti-masonic priest and after he refuses my tithe because of my Masonic affiliation reassure him of my Christianess (I know thats not a word) by saying “No no no, you don’t understand. I’m a GOOD Templar.” He won’t see the difference or attempt to understand and neither will the anti’s for centruies more to come. This issue is bigger than Masonic toleration or Templar absolutism, but it goes to the heart of all religious and philosophical toleration and acceptance. Until I see more of a proactive part on the powers that be in this world to except others as human beings I will continue to be vigilant in my pursuit for truth with my sword drawn ready for the next biggot to run himself through to the hilt. Figuratively speaking of course.

Unless the Pope reverses the years of bulls against Masonry also I doubt there will be any effect. But our web site on the other hand!

While I am glad that the Templar wrong has been righted, it may take another century or two for ignorance and fear in the name of organized religion to be likewise set aside.
Besides, I am sure that the Vatican yielded only because the Masonic Order rules the world and they were trembling in fear of our evil retribution lest they recant the Templar heresy…
