As with many things in Freemasonry, myths and opinions become custom because no one will challenge their veracity. Be it the positioning of the square or the S&C on a ring; which chair a PM be placed in, if placed at all; no campaigning; no nominations from the floor; etc. etc. If it makes you happy position it sideways, it doesn't change the symbolism of the square.

I think we ought to point the apex to the South.

Ok, that makes no sense. I'm just glad we've graduated from the 4 people who read this blog to over 20!

One day I hope to hit 25. Then I can retire!

At my lodge, it looks like at some point in the past the decorative wooden square that is glued to the furniture that is the Master's seat in the East had been pointing down, but was then removed and repositioned so that the square points up. The jewel on the collar has the apex pointing up. Of course, as part of the Great Lights, the apex is pointing down. I can't imagine how you would effectively attach a square to a collar unless you attached it to the apex. I voted for the apex pointing up, but in the end it really doesn't matter. It is the symbolism and meaning that counts.
