Be it the positioning of the square or the S&C on a ring; which chair a PM be placed in, if placed at all; no campaigning; no nominations from the floor; etc. etc. If it makes you happy position it sideways, it doesn't change the symbolism of the square. The jewel on the collar has the apex pointing up. Of course, as part of the Great Lights, the apex is pointing down. I can't imagine how you would effectively attach a square to a collar unless you attached it to the apex. I voted for the apex pointing up, but in the end it really doesn't matter. It is the symbolism and meaning that counts.
